Second-hand Caterpillar 323 excavator – South America
Recently, our company delivered two second-hand Caterpillar 323 crawler excavators to a construction contractor in South America. The contractor is undertaking a major local earthworks project and has high requirements regarding the equipment’s digging force, reliability and continuous operation capacity. After careful comparison, the client selected two second-hand Caterpillar 323 excavators offering outstanding value for money; however, as the machines originally complied with China IV emission standards, they required specific modifications prior to export to the South American market.
Emerging markets such as Africa and South America generally face the problem of unstable fuel quality: local diesel contains sulphur levels far exceeding national standards, has significant fluctuations in cetane number, and has high levels of impurities and moisture, whilst fuel quality at petrol stations varies considerably. Such low-quality fuel causes significant damage to China IV engines equipped with high-pressure common-rail systems and complex after-treatment devices (DPF particulate filters and SCR selective catalytic reduction), easily leading to clogged injectors, frequent regeneration of the after-treatment system, and even alarm-triggered shutdowns.

At the same time, construction conditions in South America are harsh: mining areas and construction sites are often characterised by high temperatures, high humidity and dust-laden environments; some projects are located at high altitudes with significant diurnal temperature variations. Coupled with poor road conditions, long lead times for spare parts and varying levels of technical proficiency among operators, failure rates will rise significantly if equipment is not specifically adapted to these conditions, severely impacting project schedules.
To address these issues, our company, drawing on our domestic specialist team and proven technology, carried out systematic modifications and commissioning on the two units:
1. Conversion from China IV to China III emissions standards: The engine ECU software was reprogrammed to adjust the fuel injection MAP map and injection pressure; the DPF/SCR after-treatment systems were removed or disabled, enabling the engine to operate on high-sulphur, low-quality fuel and fundamentally preventing blockages in the after-treatment system and alarm-triggered shutdowns.
2. Fuel system adaptation and upgrade: Installation of high-flow fuel pre-filters and high-efficiency fuel-water separators, along with the replacement of injectors suitable for low-quality fuel, to minimise damage to the high-pressure common-rail system caused by impurities and moisture.
3. Optimisation for high-temperature, high-dust environments: Upgrading the air intake system and fitting desert air filter pre-filters to improve the cleanliness of the intake air; optimise the cooling system by increasing the radiator surface area and adjusting the fan control strategy to ensure stable engine coolant temperature in high-temperature environments.
4. Fine-tuning for Optimal Performance: Based on local altitude, temperature and fuel characteristics in Peru, the engine power curve and hydraulic pump calibration were finely tuned to ensure the equipment achieves optimal operational efficiency and fuel economy under local working conditions.
Following modification and commissioning, the two Caterpillar 323 excavators were successfully delivered to South America and put into service on a large-scale earthworks project. The equipment has operated stably, with no alarms or shutdowns caused by fuel quality issues; operational efficiency has met the client’s expectations.
